Science in Your AreaAutism Speaks has funded over $5,435,846 in research grants in the state of New York. Funded studies include work done at:
Autism Treatment Network Site: University of Rochester Medial Center, Rochester, NY Spotlight on a Researcher
Spotlight on Pilot Awards Matthew Belmonte, Ph.D Video game environments for the integrative study of perception, attention and social cognition in autism and autism sibs. This study will use EEG to measure brain activity in autistic children and their siblings, as well as a control group of normal children. Brain activity will be measured both within and between brain regions while the subjects play video games with embedded tests for both high-level and low-level functions, such as attention, executive function, perception, and social cognition. Computational analysis of the activity measured will allow researchers to determine the relative strength of neural connections in different subjects while performing different types of tasks. This research will evaluate a unified hypothesis of brain dysfunction in autism, which may lead to a better understanding of the neural pathways underlying the symptoms of autism. Did you Know....Autism Speaks sponsored the first of its kind Immunology Workshopwhich evaluated the current of knowledge about the potential role of immunological factors in the pathogenesis of autism, and outlined critical areas of future research to clarify the relationship of such factors to autism and investigate their potential relevance for therapeutic interventions.
